| American Foursquare houses are so
common in Rochester that whole blocks are filled with this style, which was popular from
about 1895-1940. Families could order these houses from the Sears catalog. American
Foursquare was well suited for homes on small city lots due to its boxy shape, which fit
well on the lot while affording a roomy interior. Often these houses could incorporate
tiled roofs or other details from Craftsman, Mission or other architectural styles.
One area with many American Foursquare homes is
the 19th Ward in the southwest section of Rochester.
