MANY ROADS TO FREEDOM:
ABOLITIONIST AND CIVIL WAR SITES IN ROCHESTER

19. CAMP HILLHOUSE

Camp Hillhouse was named after Thomas Hillhouse, New York State Adjutant General. It was located on the site of the Monroe County fairgrounds about 1/4 mile south of Mount Hope Cemetery. West Henrietta Road was its eastern boundary. The western boundary was Stanford Road.

The United States government rented the land and made a major investment in the camp by creating quarters for 1,000 soldiers, plus a kitchen, dining halls, hospital facilities, stables, officers' quarters, etc. Local cavalry units were among the first to train here.
