Each year, empty boats were weighed on special scales at the weigh locks. When they were loaded with cargo, they were weighed again and the difference set the toll for that trip. The captain showed the record of the paid toll and the total weight at each of the seventeen toll offices along the Canal.
If traffic was heavy and a boat could not pass, or needed to turn, it would go to the wide waters. This one is now Lake Riley in Cobb’s Hill Park. See more information about this image
