MANY ROADS TO FREEDOM:
LOCAL MONUMENTS AND HISTORICAL MARKERS

In the Rochester area, signs of remembrance of the anti-slavery cause and the resulting Civil War are found in many places. There are graves of abolitionists and Civil War soldiers in Mount Hope Cemetery, Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Riverside Cemetery, and the various smaller cemeteries in the towns of Monroe County. There are also historical markers dedicated to Underground Railroad stops. In addition to these, there are two important public monuments in the city. One is the Soldiers and Sailors Monument in Washington Square Park. The other is the Frederick Douglass Monument now located in Highland Park.
