MANY ROADS TO FREEDOM:
ABOLITIONIST AND CIVIL WAR SITES IN ROCHESTER

5. A.M.E. ZION CHURCH

The first African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church at Spring and Favor Streets. The African-American congregation had previously worshipped at the quarters on Ely Street. This building was built in 1831 and replaced in 1879. The church was a stop on the Underground Railroad. It is also the location from which Frederick Douglass first published his North Star newspaper in 1847.
