Start Here

Follow the steps below, using the OneFile page shown on the right.

Important: Skip steps 1 & 2 if the search page appears on the right.

  1. Enter your library card number, a comma and your last name. Note: If you are a computer at the library you can skip this step.

  2. Click the Proceed button.

  3. The Search page appears. Click Keyword search in the blue column if it is not already selected.

  4. Delete any previous search words and type affirmative action in the search box.

  5. Search for words in title, citation, abstract.

  6. Limit the search by checking the box for to refereed publications.

  7. Click the Search button.

  8. Scroll down the page. Note the names of the magazines. They will be the more academic, scholarly type rather than popular magazines.

  9. Click Back to ... Search in the blue column (you may need to scroll up the page) to return to the search page.

  10. Continue to search for affirmative action, in title, citation, abstract.

  11. Remove the limit for referred publications by clicking on the check mark next to referred publications.

  12. Limit the search to articles published in 1990, 1991, 1992 and 1993 by typing 1990 - 1993 in the by date box.

  13. Click the Search button.

  14. Note the publication dates fall in the 1990 - 1993 date range.

  15. Click Back to ... Search in the blue column to return to the search page.

  16. Continue to search for affirmative action, in title, citation, abstract. Keep the date limit to 1990-1993.

  17. Click the Browse button to the right of to the following journal(s).

  18. You see a page listing magazines that start with numbers. If you scroll down the page you'll see all magazines that start with "A".

  19. Scroll back to the top of the page and look for the alphabet in the blue column.

  20. Click the letter N.

  21. Scroll down and click in the box next to Newsweek.

  22. Scroll to the top of the page and click Submit selections in the blue column.

  23. You are back at the search page with Newsweek in the limit to the following journal(s) box. You could have typed in the title instead of using Browse.

  24. Click Search.

  25. The titles listed should all be about affirmative action, published in Newsweek during the years 1990 - 1993.

  26. Close this window to return to the OneFile tutorial.
