Dear Neighbors, It’s wonderful to have another opportunity to shine the spotlight on our local residents and their talents. Our little town includes numerous artists and craftspeople, many of whom are very humble about their skills. We now using part of our Local History display case near the fish tank to showcase collections and arts & crafts, and I’m pleased to tell you about Sherri Laskowski’s handcrafted historic doll costumes currently on display. Sherri has loaned us many fine examples of Barbie® doll-sized period clothing, crocheted from patterns that she purchased; several of her costumes are award-winners. You really have to see them in person to appreciate the level of detail and skill that it took to make them! Kevin Yost has also shared several new paintings depicting famous athletes and these are on display in the teen area. John and Jane Sheret have loaned us two beautiful examples of hand-framed theorem paintings. Let us know if you have artwork or a collection that you’d be willing to lend for display; please stop in or give us a call. Photo Contest: Our third annual Photo Contest winners have been announced. The submissions were terrific, and the whole library community participated in the judging. Congratulations to our prize winners: Pinky Brice & Cory Smith (Day in the Life of Rush category) and Leah Herring & Joel Schmid (General category) – thank you to everyone who participated! Book Sale: Our annual “Vote for Books” Election Week Book Sale will take place Saturday, October 31st – Friday, November 6th during our business hours. It features hardcover & paperback books for all ages, starting at 25¢. There will be a $2.00 bag sale on Friday- we’ll supply the bags. Donations of gently-used, clean books and other materials are always accepted, and tax receipts are available. (We cannot accept encyclopedias or textbooks, and please bring in your donations when we are open.) If you can’t wait until November for a bargain, you can shop anytime at The Book Nook, our well-organized book sale room; it’s always open when the library is open. Gazebofest update: We were extremely lucky with the weather this summer for our new concert series; we feel that it was a remarkable success and are already looking forward to next year. If you or someone you know is a musician interested in performing next summer, please call us or drop off a business card. In case you were wondering, the gazebo, landscaping, benches, and the concert series are all paid for with donations and fundraisers, not your tax dollars. So while I’m on the subject… Save the Date! The Friends of the Rush Library are having their 6th Annual Wine Tasting Benefit on Saturday, February 6th, 2009, from 7-9:30 at the Rabbit Room in Honeoye Falls. Enjoy a tasteful evening with wines provided by our newest sponsor, Erie Station Fine Wines & Liquor, in a sophisticated atmosphere of fine art in the historic Mill Gallery. Tickets will be $25 per person, $50 per couple and will go on sale December 1st. Tickets to this event make a unique holiday gift! (Proceeds from this benefit support special library projects that are beyond our normal operating budget. In addition to concerts, this year the Friends have also paid for many programs for children and adults. ) There is still time to sign on as a business sponsor for this benefit. If you are a local business owner who is interested in supporting the Rush Library, you are encouraged to contact Friends’ chairperson, Heather Iannone (359-9914), to discuss sponsorship options. We are also soliciting products and services to be donated to the Silent Auction, a popular feature of the evening. We’d love to have you share in our success! Looking forward to seeing you, Kirsten
