The Life and Work of Harvey Ellis
Death in Syracuse, 1904
In 1904, on January 2, Harvey Ellis died after an illness at a Syracuse Hospital. Although he had given up alcohol previously, there are reports that he turned to it in his final days to deal with the pain of sickness. He was remembered fondly in an obituary for the Rochester Herald, and in later years by those who knew him, including his friend and fellow architect, Claude Bragdon.
Today Ellis is celebrated as having had a major impact on the development of the skyscraper. He was one of the great American architects of his era. Much of his work remains with us to this day to be studied and admired. In addition to his skills as an architect, he is remembered for his writing, his illustration work and his painting.
