Introduction
The Internet, as provided by the Monroe County Library System, enables the Irondequoit Public Library (IPL) to provide electronic information beyond the confines of our collection.
The Irondequoit Public Library upholds and affirms the Library Bill of Rights, which supports the right of each individual to access constitutionally protected material.
The Children’s Internet Protection Act (1999) requires all public and school libraries to filter internet sites that may be harmful to children.
The library is not responsible for what may be accessed via the library’s Internet connections, nor can the library protect users from materials they may find offensive or disturbing. The library reserves the right, at its discretion, to end an Internet session at any time if it disrupts the good order of the library.
Rules Governing Use
You must have a valid Monroe County Library System library card with you in order to log on to the Internet. You may use only your library card; you may not use family members’ or friends’ library cards, especially to extend your time.
You may use an Internet PC for up to 45 minutes.
No waiting list will be taken.
If available, you may use a different Internet PC for up to 45 minutes, and then your time is up for the day.
You must sign out of the Internet when you are finished, or your time will continue to run.
Printing from computer terminals costs $.15 per page. Color printing is not available. Pick up your prints and pay for them at the circulation desk.
Internet Resources
Currently, the library offers a graphical interface to the World Wide Web on several workstations. The Irondequoit Public Library reference staff cannot provide in-depth computer training, but will answer questions and, as time allows, help users locate and use resources on the Internet or on other electronic tools in the library.
Choosing and Evaluating Sources
The Internet is an unregulated medium. It offers access to many valuable local, national, and international sources of information. However, not all sources on the Internet provide accurate, complete or current information.
The Internet Home Page of the Monroe County Library System (MCLS) has been constructed in accordance with generally accepted library practices and MCLS is responsible for its content. IPL is not responsible for changes in the content of the sources to which we link, through LIBRA, nor the content of sources accessed through secondary links.
Users may not:
Impinge on other patrons' privacy while they are using the PCs.
Install, delete or modify library hardware or software.
Install or download any software.
Participate in illegal activities on the internet such as copyright infringement, credit card crime, sending of spam or sending harassing e-mail.
Children's Use of the Internet
IPL affirms the right and responsibility of parents to monitor their minor children's use of library materials and resources, including Internet access. The library does not have the right or responsibility to act in loco parentis.
