Searching for Business and Company Information: A Tutorial

TIPS FOR BETTER SEARCHES

Use the Quick Search Bar found below the banner for quick access to a company, industry or article search. (Where is this?)  Note: The search type will revert back to the default setting for company search after any search type is used.

Try different forms of a company name. In an article search using the words "Corning Glass Works" is a better search than just "Corning." The company search "Kodak" with "Ultimate parent" selected is actually a better search than using "Eastman Kodak."

Spelling and plurals do make a difference. When doing an industry search the word "restaurant" yields no results but you will be successful when you search the word "restaurants."

Capitalization does not matter.

Punctuation is important.

  • Include hyphens:  anti-trust

  • Delete apostrophes:  Wegman stores instead of Wegman's stores

  • Ignore ampersands:  Bausch Lomb instead of Bausch & Lomb

  • Use periods between two words:  amazon.com

Use the Advanced Search for more options, including Boolean searches. (Where do I find Advanced Search?)
